Emanuel Ungaro was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1933. His father, originally from Francavilla Fontana in Brindisi, was a tailor who had been exiled to France because he was anti-fascist. When he received a sewing machine as a gift, Emanuel began to create creations based on the mixture of baroque and sensuality. After a period at Balenciaga he opened his own fashion house. Bright colors and cleverly draped floral patterns were its hallmark. In the 1980s, he was considered one of the 5 great names of Parisian haute couture, also dressing famous people such as Jackie Kennedy and the Duchess of Windsor. He died in Paris in December 2019.
