Richard Tyler, of Australian origin, approached the world of fashion early. At the age of sixteen, in fact, he began working in his mother’s dressmaking shop, which made costumes for the city’s ballet company; after a few years he opened his own shop in Melbourne. He created young, contemporary-style clothes that were popular with singers such as Elton John, Cher, Rod Stewart, for whom he designed the tour clothes in 1978. In 1984 he moved to Los Angeles, where he opened a showroom on Beverly Boulevard together with his wife. Modern women’s clothes made with particular attention to cut and fabrics won over American actresses such as Julia Roberts, Sigourney Weaver, Nicole Kidman. In 1993 Tyler designed a collection for Anne Klein, then dedicating himself to his own ready-to-wear lines. In 1993 he licensed Rossimoda to produce his first shoe collection, an important accessory to define his ideal of a feminine and sensual woman. In 1996 he began collaborating with the Italian company Genny. Although he launched his sportswear line in 1997, Richard Tyler continues to link his fame to his beautiful, meticulously tailored suits, for which he is called a “master tailor”.
