He debuted in fashion in 1986, after graduating from Parson’s School of Design in New York. From 1988 to 1999 he designed the collections of Perry Ellis, but it was in 1998 that he became one of the most established designers, thanks to his extravagance, during a spectacular parade in a car park. The grunge style is soon replaced by chic and refined clothes, he himself says: «I love to make everyday clothing something luxurious».
In 1997 he becomes the new artistic director of Louis Vuitton, for which he designs a women’s clothing line for a strong and confident woman. The LVMH group has acquired a majority stake in Marc Jacobs International, allowing the designer to launch new lines, including the Marc by Marc Jacobs shoe collection.
