Foundation Year: 1961
Nation: Italy
Production: from 1990 to 2000
The brand was born in Ancona in 1961, where Arnaldo Girombelli produced women’s skirts and blouses in his own boutique. His success was such that in 1976 he called the designer and future wife Donatella Ronchi to join him, who in 1980, upon her husband’s death, took over the management. In 1968 the first factory of the fashion house opened and in 1973 Gianni Versace was hired, who worked for the company until the 1990s, creating the young line Byblos. Versace was only the first of a series of designers who began their careers within the company such as Dolce and Gabbana, Christian Lacroix and Richard Tyler. In June 2001 Genny became part of the Prada group, and in September 2002 Francisco Rosas was appointed as the new designer. Since March 2011, after a few years of suspension, the collections have been designed by Gabriele Colangelo, who presented his first collection in Milan as creative director, with the aim of relaunching one of the brands that have made and represented Italian fashion in the world.
